Asking a date to prom using an elaborate, creative scheme is always fun — except when said ask involves harming federally protected lands. Unfortunately, that's apparently what happened at the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

On Thursday, the park's social media pages shared posts featuring an image of a large boulder near the park's Sandstone Peak, the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains just outside Los Angeles, California, with the word "Prom?" painted on its face in large white letters, Mashable reports. The post on Facebook, signed by an official, Ranger Zach, says, "We love hearing about creative promposals, but damaging public lands is not the way to do it."

It seems this isn't the first time that this rock has been targeted by disrespectful prom-goers, either. According to Ranger Zach, this is the second year in a row that the rock has been vandalized in the name of a promposal.

The rangers, it seems, aren't planning to take this one lying down, however. Their social media posts indicate that they are searching for the graffiti artist and encourage anyone with information about the crime to contact park ranger dispatch at 661-723-3620. Take this as a lesson: You absolutely can still have the night of your life with your dream date by your side without defacing the natural beauty of a protected land intended for all to enjoy.
