At the commencement ceremony for Harvard's Graduate School of Education, masters candidate Donovan Livingston blew his peers away with a spoken word poem on oppression, and the long road which led from slavery to his presence on a graduation stage.

"When I spoke at my high school graduation several years ago, my high school English teacher threatened to replace me on the program or cut my microphone when she found out that I was interested in doing a poem as a part of my remarks," he told the crowd. "So, I am eternally grateful for being able to share my most authentic voice, this piece of myself, with you this afternoon."

Thus begins this phenomenal piece of writing. Take five minutes to watch Donovan's reading in its entirety.
