With multiple ad campaigns, a new makeup line and a slew of enviable street style looks, Hailey Baldwin is no doubt a rising star in the modeling industry. She landed yet another spokesmodel gig, this time with everyone's favorite footwear brand: UGG. Hailey fronts the "Classic Street Collection," which features everything from the classic style you know and love, to the cool lace-up ankle boots that Hailey wears for our interview.
Despite the frenzied swarm of publicists and reporters surrounding her, Hailey is cool, calm and collected. She opened up about everything from her personal styling tricks to how to take the perfect selfie. Scroll down for our interview and an exclusive first look at Hailey Baldwin's new video campaign.
Teen Vogue: How would you describe your personal style?
Hailey Baldwin: My style is pretty casual. I like to be comfortable most of the time but still chic. I don’t like to overdo it. A lot of the time you see people in their street style and they’re like really done up. I just make sure that my style is myself. I like to do a lot of jackets. Like oversized but still like ladylike and chic.
TV: What is your number one styling trick?
HB: I always say, if you’re going to wear something tight on top, go with something a little looser on the bottom. If you’re going to do both tight, wear an oversized jacket. I don’t like everything all tight or all baggy.
TV: What’s your favorite item in your closet?
HB: That’s so hard. I have a problem with jackets. I love leather jackets. When you open my closet, it’s a problem. I also travel so much that I have a huge collection of hoodies and sweatshirts. I really like Vetements.
TV: How do you incorporate UGGs into your street style looks?
HB: Specifically, with the streetwear collection, it’s a lot easier to incorporate it. It’s still UGG, and it’s still comfortable but it’s more of a street shoe. It’s comfortable with shorts and jeans.
TV: What is your top boot style pick for fall?
HB: I’m a big fan of ankle boots. These Quincy boots [by UGG] are my favorite because they’re easy to wear and style.
TV: Do you have any embarrassing back-to-school outfit stories?
HB: I didn’t go to real school for long, so pajamas were my wardrobe staple. But I do remember in 6th grade, there was a store that sold novelty t-shirts and a song called “This Is Why I’m Hot” — and I came into a school with [a shirt bearing that phrase]. It was a Christian school and that was a no go. I got detention, obviously.
TV: That's hilarious! What are some of your tips and tricks for social media?
HB: I’m super careful about what I post some times. Other times, I just want people to see my personality. I think the more genuine you come across, it gives people the opportunity to see who you really are. In terms of selfies, it’s about lighting. Bad lighting can just end really poorly. Also don’t make it too serious.
TV: What has been your favorite modeling moment so far?
HB: I got to work with Karl Lagerfeld which was amazing. When we talk about someone being a living legend, he’s a living legend. I think that was a moment for me where I was like "this is crazy".
TV: What advice would you give to aspiring models?
HB: I would say that they should know that it takes time. Be patient. It doesn’t happen at the snap of your fingers. It happened kind of quickly for me, but it still has taken time and effort and commitment. Have fun with it. My dad always says, “the second it’s not fun, it’s not worth it.”
TV: Fashion week is coming up. What's your pre-Fashion Week ritual?
HB: Stay healthy and sleep. There’s a lot going on and all of my friends are in town so I like to run around and then, I lack in the rest department. It’s still going to be hot outside, so drink tons of water and stick with the routine.
