Hint: you have it too

Actress Lola Kirke looked amazing when she hit the red carpet on Sunday for the Golden Globes. She killed it in a gorgeous pink dress with floral details. While Mozart in the Jungle actress Lola chose to keep accessories to a minimum (except one, shall we say, statement piece), she did feature part of her signature look in the outfit: her armpit hair.

The Golden Globes are a chance for celebrities to get glammed up and celebrate their year of work. It's the subject of best and worst dressed fodder and their red carpet looks — particularly the women — get a lot of attention. That's why Lola showing up with hairy pits matters.

Lola showed that beauty is not just one look. You don't have to be free from body hair to be gorgeous, in fact your hair is gorgeous if you choose to keep it there. Society tells us that women are supposed to shave and be ashamed of our fuzz (OK let's be honest, full on forests), but the reality is body hair is totally normal and healthy, which makes it beautiful. Lola is a perfect example of that.

In an Instagram post, Lola outlined just how serious the expectation that women shave their hair can be.

"Ok! Now I'm really ready," Lola wrote under a picture of her in her dress. "Thanks to all you beautiful people who didn't send me death threats on account of my #awesome #hairyarmpits! You rule."

As we know all too well, women on the internet or in the public eye are subject to constant scrutiny and harassment, even over something as minor as armpit hair. Someone may not like the way armpit hair looks, but that doesn't give anyone the right to weigh in on Lola's, especially not at the cost of her life.

What Lola did was not a radical statement, it was simply her living in her body in the way she chooses to. Armpit hair is natural and whether or not she chooses to keep it or shave it is no one's business but hers. At the end of the day, Lola simply being herself set a shining example for all the rest of us hairy ladies, and for that we're thankful.
