A Suspect Is in Custody After Reportedly Bringing a Gun to Illinois's Dixon High School

Police say a school resource officer exchanged gunfire with the suspect at Dixon High School Wednesday morning.

A suspect is in custody after allegedly exchanging gunfire with a school resource officer at Dixon High School in Dixon, Illinois, according to a media release from Dixon city manager Danny Langloss, as reported by WQAD 8. Around 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16, the suspect was reportedly confronted by a school resource officer. According to WQAD 8, the city's media release said the officer returned fire after the suspect shot at him; the release said the officer shot the suspect, who is believed to have non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect is currently receiving medical treatment after being taken into custody. According to tweet from CBS Evening News, city officials have confirmed that the suspect was male. Sauk Valley Media reported that the suspect was a 19-year-old former student, but this has not been confirmed by police, city, or school officials.

WQAD 8 reports that no one else was injured during the armed confrontation. Local police said they believe the suspect was acting alone and haven't advised of any further threats to the school or area, but Dixon High School and all Dixon Public Schools are still on lockdown as a safety precaution.

A reporter for NBC affiliate KWQC-TV6 spoke with a witness who described hearing 6 to 10 gunshots, but did not see what happened, according to a tweet she posted.

Parents have been instructed by the school district to pick up children at a baseball field roughly a half mile from the school. According to a message on the school's website, they have been instructed to bring an ID.

A press conference has been scheduled in Dixon for later today.
