Luxury brand Gucci is taking an interesting approach to politics within the last year. While similarly-tiered brands are addressing today's political climate in their messaging, Gucci is remaining adamantly neutral, acknowledging looks purchased by Melania Trump and Kellyanne Conway in the past. In an interview with the The Washington Post, the brand's creative director Alessandro Michele was quoted as saying: “We have all kinds of customers. Everybody is free to do what they want."

Their stance makes sense: the Gucci New York City location takes up the first three floors of Trump Tower, intrinsically tying the brand to the President. Last week, when Donald Trump returned to New York City, protests erupted in the streets near Trump Tower over his response to the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which many view as an endorsement of white supremacy and domestic terrorism.

One attendee in the crowd reportedly spotted two people in the windows at the Gucci store, holding signs that read: “Hate has no home here.” After the photo circulated through news outlets, Gucci released the following statement: “In response to an inaccurate report by a US media outlet, in which protesters in New York City were misidentified as Gucci employees, Gucci immediately contacted the outlet to make a customary correction. This US media outlet instead misinterpreted the company's intent to clarify this error, inferring that the request reflected Gucci's position on the protest. Gucci believes in and stands for equality in race, religion, sexual orientation and gender. With respect to the recent racially motivated events in Charlottesville, Gucci condemns any form of hatred, racism and intolerance, including the ideologies of the white supremacist movement."
