Popular Netflix teen comedy Never Have I Ever is returning for season 2.

Co-created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher (and inspired by Mindy’s own childhood), the show follows newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as high school sophomore Devi Vishwakumar as she navigates the highs and lows of being a Hindu-Indian teenager from Sherman Oaks, California. The second season was officially confirmed when Netflix posted a zoom call of Maitreyi and her co-stars breaking the news (fun fact: Maitreyi got bangs in quarantine).

Maitreyi is set to reprise her role as Devi, with returning castmates including Darren Barnet, Poorna Jagannathan, Richa Moorjani, Jaren Lewison, Lee Rodriguez, and Ramona Young. The highly acclaimed season one of Never Have I Ever set the foundation for Devi’s narrative as she grieved the loss of her father while balancing friendships, school politics, and new romances.

Maitreyi was cast following an open casting call that drew over 15,000 responses. Season one ended on a cliffhanger as Devi was seen kissing lifelong frenemy Ben Gross (played by Jaren Lewison) while Paxton Hall-Yoshida (played by Darren Bennet) waited on her doorstep. But the story is far from over.

“A lot of people of color and the South Asian community [are] so used to being sidekicks, we’re so used to being comedic relief,” Maitreyi told Variety. The show has been applauded for its diversity and showing coming of age in all of its messy, glorious light.

Given the halt of production due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s no official set date for when production and release for Never Have I Ever season 2 might be. But until such time, all of season 1 is available for streaming on Netflix.
