6 Things You Shouldn’t Say to Kids With LGBTQ Parents

Starring supermodel Josephine Skriver.

Supermodel Josephine Skriver grew up with gay parents, so when she heard about Gayby Baby, a documentary about what it’s like to grow up with same-sex parents, it resonated with her. Now, Josephine is acting as an ambassador for the film, which comes out on May 1 — International Family Equality Day.

Josephine sat down with Teen Vogue to share a few things kids with LGBTQ parents are tired of hearing — like how she was conceived, and whether or not her friends were uncomfortable going to her house.

If this is the first time you've heard of the term "gayby," here's what you need to know: Gayby is a term some families use for a child with gay or lesbian parents, but it’s hardly a scientific term. It’s a term the documentary adopted because it was coined by children with same-sex attracted parents to describe themselves with a sense of pride. While some people continue to use the term, it's important to keep in mind that it is a choice for each individual child whether to use this term or not — besides, as Josephine notes, most people just call them "kids."

Josephine believes that "everyone should be free to love whoever they want to love," and she hopes talking about her family and this documentary will help people keep an open mind when they think about love, family, and gender roles.

Remember to join Josephine in the conversation May 1 by downloading and watching Gayby Baby on iTunes, and posting your thoughts to Instagram and Twitter using the hashtag #GAYBYBABY.
